- Explores the current concerns about climate change, renewable energy supply, low-carbon economy, and solid resources, with emphasis on the sustainable management of water. Case studies that focus on integrating water resources into urban development at the planning, design, and construction stages are discussed. Additional water issues discussed include managing storm water runoff, water conservation, use of recycled water and other hydrologic processes.
Building materials choices are important in sustainable design because of the extensive extraction, processing and transportation steps required to acquire them. This course provides designers and builders comprehensive, life-cycle-based materials selection tools for better decision making in relation to their energy and environmental impacts and benefits. The various rating systems are discussed as well as the impacts of selecting durable and environmentally responsible building materials and methods.
