What is Moodle?

Moodle is an open source course management system. More information can be found at moodle.org.

Why can't I log in?

If you have not used Moodle before, you'll need to set up a NetID to access your course. Instructions on setting up your NetID will be sent by email once you register for a course. Once you've set up the NetID, the most common problems logging in are that you have simply forgotten your password, are trying the wrong one or are entering it incorrectly. Remember that passwords are case sensitive. For help with log in problems, email netidhelp@ucx.ucr.edu.

How do I gain access to a course?

Once you have logged in, courses you are enrolled in will be visible in the My Courses block on the left side of the Moodle home page. Click on the course title to access the course.

I registered for a course, set up my NetID, and I've logged in to Moodle, but I don't see any courses under My Courses?

You will only see courses which begin in less than seven days or which have already started under My Courses. If your course starts in more than seven days, you won't have access to it.

I just registered for an online/hybrid course but I can't log in to Moodle!

It can take up to two hours for your account to be activated after you've set up your NetID. If you've waited two hours and still don't have access to your course, and your course starts in less than a week, please contact netidhelp@ucx.ucr.edu via email.

How do I get back to the homepage?

Use the navigation bar at the top left of the page or the button at the very bottom of the course

How do I change my Moodle password?

Your Moodle password is actually your NetID password and can be changed here if you know your password. If you don't know your password, send an email to netidhelp@ucx.ucr.edu and request that your password be reset. You will receive an email message with instructions on how to set up a new password.

How do I find course X?

If you are not already enrolled in a course you can search for it by name and description, but you will only have access to courses you've enrolled in and courses which are open to everyone, such as the Moodle Help course.

Course content

Where have all of the weeks / topics gone?

You have probably clicked on the Image:One.gif icon. To reveal all of the other weeks / topics you need to click on the Image:All.gif icon which you will see in the right margin of the week / topic. You can also use the dropdown menu underneath the displayed week / topic to jump to a hidden section

Emails and forums

Why am I not getting any e-mails and others are?

Chances are your email address in your profile is either wrong or disabled. It could also be that you are not subscribed to the forums that are generating emails.

How can I stop all of these e-mails?

E-mails are an essential part of the way Moodle works. They are used to keep you up to date with what is going on. If you wish to reduce the amount of emails you get you could:

  • Edit your profile and change your e-mail settings to digest
  • Unsubscribe from non-essential forums

Assignments and grades

Why is there no upload box?

This is either because:

  • The assignment has now closed
  • The assignment is not yet open
  • You already uploaded something and the settings prevent resubmissions

How many files can I attach to a Forum posting?

You can only upload one file with each post you make in a Forum. If you need to include multiple files, you can combine them into one file or create a .zip archive with all of your files.
